The Missing Link
Capacity Building in Healthcare Organizations
While many funders focus solely on program support, we recognize that strong organizations are essential for delivering sustainable healthcare solutions.
Our $615,000 grant to Gladstone School District represents an investment in a revolutionary approach to childhood well-being. The district’s journey since 2011 in implementing trauma-informed care offers valuable insights for communities across Oregon and beyond.
This approach represents a fundamental shift in perspective, moving from “What’s wrong with this student?” to “What happened to this student?” This change opens up new possibilities for supporting children’s health and academic success.
The program integrates health services, academic support, and social-emotional learning into a cohesive framework addressing the whole child. During recent challenging times, this comprehensive approach has proven particularly valuable as students faced increased isolation and anxiety.
The program’s success relies on several key components: comprehensive staff training, integrated nutrition support, and technology access. Staff members across all roles understand trauma’s impact and know how to respond appropriately. The program acknowledges the fundamental connection between physical health and emotional well-being.
Most importantly, the initiative demonstrates schools’ vital role in community health. By positioning schools as hubs for health and wellness services, we create accessible, familiar entry points for families who might hesitate to seek help through traditional healthcare channels.
