The landscape of behavioral health care in Oregon stands at a pivotal moment of transformation. Through our recent $22.5 million donation to Western University of Health Sciences, we’re reimagining the future of behavioral health care delivery in our region.
Oregon faces significant challenges in meeting the growing demand for mental health services, particularly in rural areas. Our response goes beyond traditional solutions. The new behavioral health college at WesternU, built on 150 acres of donated land, represents a comprehensive approach to addressing these challenges by integrating behavioral health, rural health, population health, and osteopathic primary care approaches.
This initiative will drive multiple impacts across our healthcare system. It will increase the behavioral health workforce in Oregon, improve services in rural communities, and create practitioners who understand the vital connection between mental and physical health. The college’s curriculum emphasizes innovative approaches including telehealth technologies, community-based care models, and cultural competency.
The impact will extend beyond education. The college will serve as a hub for research, innovation, and community engagement. Through partnerships with local healthcare providers and community organizations, it will create new opportunities for collaboration that benefit the entire region.
As we look to the future, we see this investment as a catalyst for change in behavioral health care delivery. By training the next generation of healthcare professionals in an integrated, innovative environment, we’re helping to create a healthcare system that better serves all Oregonians.
